What is Hyaluronic Acid and why does it work?

Hyaluronic Acid is a hugely beneficial skincare ingredient found in everything from our serums to moisturizers. To be put simply, it is a naturally occurring acid that enables your skin to absorb and retain more moisture. It delivers long term hydration to improve skin texture and appearance.

The question is, how does it accomplish that? On the surface, the word acid and hydration don't seem to naturally go together, but if you delve beneath the surface, you will find that acids can aid your skin in moisture retention. What many people are unaware of, is that moisture plays a key intrinsic role in skin damage and eventual aging. To quote from a 2012 study on Hyaluronic Acid:

Youthful skin retains its turgor, resilience and pliability, among others, due to its high content of water. Daily external injury, in addition to the normal process of aging, causes loss of moisture. The key molecule involved in skin moisture is hyaluronic acid (HA) that has unique capacity in retaining water.

A 2020 study that looked into the role that hydration, and in particular Hyaluronic Acid, plays in preventing skin damage:

Natural skin aging is associated with a significant reduction in the capacity of skin to retain water [...] In addition to its rapid turnover rate in the skin (~24 hours), both intrinsic and extrinsic factors contribute to a marked reduction of epidermal HA [Hyaluronic Acid], making it one of the most dramatic changes observed in senescent skin.

So if moisture is such an important aspect of skin health, how does Hyaluronic Acid help? It retains a huge amount of moisture per gram, in a 2014 study they found that:

One of its most important properties is that it [Hyaluronic Acid] can attach and hold large amounts of moisture; approximately 6L of water in just 1g.

We have established that moisture plays a key intrinsic role in skin health, and that Hyaluronic Acid is uniquely equipped to retain a huge amount of moisture relative to its weight. Therefore, we can understand how including Hyaluronic Acid in your skincare routine can be hugely beneficial; that is why we decided that Botanical Hyaluronic Acid would be the hero ingredient of our Hydrator Serum.

We wanted to ensure that our Hydrator Serum lived up to its promise. We went beyond just Botanical Hyaluronic Acid, an extract of Cassia Angustifolia to compliment it with Organic Aloe Vera, Vitamin E, and Centella Asiatica to build a wholistic serum that contains a number of active ingredients that aid in the maintenance of your skin's moisture barrier. We developed a serum that goes beyond standard lab-derived Hyaluronic Acid to soothe and moisturize skin to increase elasticity and resilience to help maintain healthy skin.

Moisture is a fundamental aspect of skin health, and our serum, The Hydrator, provides a uniquely capable formula that imbues your skin with moisture leaving it healthier and happier. We think it is an essential part of a good skincare routine and encourage you to try it and see the change it creates.
